The only thing that I see wrong with this idea is that your new friend might not know what you personally like in a girl. and whoever he has on the list there is a chance that you might not like their personality.
So it would be like a blind date really. So try not to be in such a rush because there are plenty of other oppertunites for you to have a date not just homecoming. how about prom?
Or you can just go with a few friends and maybe you will meet someone you like who isn't taken that is what I am going to do for my homecoming dance. But ultimately its your choice so all I can say is good luck and I wish you the best.
