Great question! A good lube is crucial for anal sex, much more so than for regular vaginal intercourse. That's because the vagina automatically lubricates (usually) but the anus does not.
Also keep in mind it's relatively easy to tear the fine lining of the intestine, and that can lead to infections and other problems that take long to heal. We're not down on anal sex, just be sure you're practicing safely.
Key points for choosing a lubricant, especially for anal sex:
Use a water based lube that washes off easily
Use a thick, high quality, long lasting lubricant that doesn't dry up or get sticky
Do NOT use a desensitizing lube, because it's important to keep sensation and feel any level of discomfort
All that having been said, our recommendation to date is
Maximus. It's also quite inexpensive compared with KY (which does NOT compare).
I was recently having an in-depth lube comparison with the experts from our new sponsors and sex toy partners,
Eden Fantasys. They were very adamant that Maximus is the best. They sent us plenty of others to check out, but this one is our favorite to date.
Another thing I like about the
Maximus lubricant compared with all the others we've tried: the bottle has a push-pump (like liquid hand soap dispensers usually have) for easy dispensing. The last thing you want to do is search for the darn lid "during".
