Age difference can be a huge thing. Think about this: the older person has much more life behind them, and much more baggage. They have had more relationships, more life changing events, and more time to figure out who they are. When two people are older and pair up, most likely they are in similar places in their life. However, when an older person is with a younger problems can creep up, because inevitably they will go through the same life "issues" that the older person has already dealt with. Chances are, the younger person will "find themselves" at some point, and then they will have to make a decision to stay or go. This is as much related to maturity and background as age. Case in point, my ex-wife fell head over heals for me because I was very mature, and that's what she needed at that time. 10 years later she realized that I was more of a father figure to her than a husband, and she no longer needed that.
