Interracial help... Can a black guy date a white girl?

Dear Dan and Jennifer, Do a majority of people still have a problem with interracial relationships? How would the cops react if they say a black guy with a white girl?

I'm a antisocial black guy who's always found white girls attractive and I don't want to get discouraged from dating interracially.

Interracial dating is a fairly safe practice and is accepted a lot more than it was 30 years ago You will notice it in practically every large city in America. There are still some parts of the country that are not accepting and those people reflect that. I'm in the Dallas area and it's every where. You might still find some cops that don't approve, but that may be about it. Personally, I feel comfortable going anywhere with anyone. Maybe it's just my personality of not worrying about what others think. Since you're on the west coast, you should be safe. That is usually a liberal part of the country.

In general, interracial dating is not dangerous at all. While you might get some disapproving stares if you live in a rural area, hardly anyone will even notice you if you live in a large metropolitan area. Your "antisocial" personality is a far bigger obstacle for your dating future.

You're likely to run across disapproving people no matter who date. There are just those who are judgmental and disapprove for the sake of disapproving. They'll disapprove of interracial dating, gay and lesbian dating, age gap dating...whatever. You can't please all of the people all of the time and why would you want to?

What others think isn't the bigger issue anyway is it? It's about you and who you are attracted to and want to date. You have to worry about making yourself happy and let the rest of society worry about themselves.

Speaking from experience (she's Irish, I'm African American), it really is about where you live and how your part of the world reacts when they see two people of the same sex. The deal breaker for us is our daughter who has her mom's blue eyes and her dad's height and big feet. I never have heard one derogatory thing leveled at her because her personality and her charm wins people over. But we do have places who still cannot look past the skin tone and will let you know (in a heartbeat) they only date within their own race. Man, as if their particular race is pure and having someone outside it diminish it on some level. If we all look back we all have some other race/culture mixed in with us.

May I suggest a great series on MSNBC talking about the growing multicultural world emerging in our country. It isn't about black and white alone; it is about how new familes and dynamics are emerging as love is the factor of these families and couples drawing together despite the differences.

I would like to think we're in a more accepting world where we don't need to worry about what the cops think but I live in the UK and I know things are a bit different in the US.

Of course it's OK to date white girl and as others have suggested, the problems only arise from other people's perception of things and how you (or your partner) may react to that.

I'm curious as to what you mean by "antisocial black guy"? If you don't go out, that's half your problem solved ;-)

But on a serious note, if you truly want to be with someone, don't let your fears about other peoples hangups get in the way.

There are certain states you must stay clear of. Each of these states have mountains. Mountain people don't go for this. Of course, he family will disown her and she'll lose her inheritance and you'll probably have none, so she's going to pay a price.

We travel the entire state of Colorado, so we can assure you that we are not referring merely to Denver. In fact, we even enjoy the occasional trip to Wyoming, so we do not share your characterization of mountain people in general.

We checked out your suggested search terms, but we fail to see what those incidents specifically have to do with "race mixing." To put a different twist on your analogy, crime will occur in any city in which you have people bunched up like farm animals, and it won't matter if the animals are all Mallards, all Muscovies, or a mix of the two.

But getting back to the original poster's question, a 2007 Gallup Poll revealed that 77% percent of Americans approve of interracial marriage between blacks and whites, while only 17% disapprove. That's a pretty overwhelming majority, so Marcus should feel safe wherever he and his future white girlfriend choose to go in this country.
