I like a girl that my bestfriend also likes....help?

Ok heres the background information. I'm at a tertiary school study japanese, and my best friend is study enginnering there. We've made many friends there. One being this Japanese girl. I started liking her, but my mate tells me he likes her and I start to back off a bit and being the "nice guy" that I'm known for... let him go for her as I thought i could find someone else.

but right now its not really what I've been hoping for, they havent started seeing each other, but he did spend the night at her house last weekend. and Im starting to like her even more.

I dont kow what to do. I've talked to 4 close friends. one says just go for her, everyman for themself. 2 of them says talk to him bout it... the other says stop being the nice guy and do what makes me most happiest.

This is what I think about her, I'm not sure if shes even interested in me, like maybe just a friend. And she's going back to Japan next year jan. She usually has plans throughout the week with many other people.

But sorry this topic is kinda split to dating and friendship.

My bestfriend; I dont think I wanna be friends with him and more. I know how he's treated other friends before in the past. he's a little selfish some people have told me. He goes out with other girls even though he says he likes this one... the reason why Im still friends with him is we have the same group of friends, see him everyday. but he always aviods these kind of topics and never likes talking bout it.

So I know I like her.
my bestmate, dunno if he REALLY does like her,
I dunno who Yuki likes.. maybe neither of us >_<
If I go out with her, not sure about him...
but then again... trading his friendship for someone I like, might it be worth it?

I just dunno what to do really.

Okay, Step 1: Talk to your Friend, find out if he has made a move yet.

Step 2: Talk to the Girl, find out if she has any interest in you, or your friend.

Step 3: If both converstations end with the Girl and your friend not dateing each other, and if she does have any interest in you, and you have a clear feild, and go for it.

What ever you do, don't just stand by and do nothing, or it might haunt you forever.
