One of my closest male friends recently came out, and he can't tell his parents because they are really religious and would disown him for it.

This is a hard place to be, if you don't tell them then you basically keep a huge part of your life a secret from your parents (no easy task, especially if you're close to them) but there is also the risk they won't accept you.

Self love (as has been mentioned) is the most important. If you can't love yourself regardless of what they say or how they feel about it then you have some self work to do before you tell them. However when you're confident and comfortable with yourself then calmly sit them down and talk to them.

Let them know they did NOT make a mistake in raising you, that you're still their child and you still love them. You aren't a different person, you're the same only with a newfound knowledge about yourself and be prepared to answer any questions they may have.

If at first they're rejectful of the notion don't worry, often times that will pass. In the case that it doesn't (sad but true at times) remember it isn't your fault, you did nothing wrong in being open about yourself.
