Neil,
I think you make a good point. A good mediator IS useful. Unfortunately not every state supports divorce via a mediator.

A lawyer can provide you legal advice and do all of the footwork in every state in the USA. Not only that they also know the judges in counties in which they practice.

Part of divorce is dividing your assets and your debts to the court system, if you had a lawyer or not.

Following that 50+% of all marriages end in divorce, you know someone who is divorced and can "shop" around for a lawyer.

One thing I do recommend is not pay any consultation fee's. Any lawyer (ahem) worth a grain of salt will provide you free consultation and only ask for a retainer when you determine you want their services.

You are way off the mark here
Divorce attorneys are way lower then Used Car Salespeople. They stir the pot for their own gain.
You have to reveal, both sides, all your assets
The lawyers are gonna do whatever they can
under the guise of "Helping" until they get at least
40% and leave each party with 30% or less.
What you should have advised was to find a really good mediator. They get you to the same point
and save you 30% of your assets and take the combat out. Lawyers are all about the MONEY
and how they can get yours.
The only person that would advise getting a lawyer is someone who hasn't gotten divorced!!!!!!!!!
