Hey Jeff,

Welcome and thank you so much for sharing your great experience with your wife.

It's always beautiful to see relationships not only stay together, but grow and flourish.

It's interesting what feedback we've gotten since making this post...

The comments here on our blog and on other blogs were from people who WERE high school sweethearts and now have a wonderful relationship together.

But we also received a number of private emails on this, and those were from people who after a long time decided to break it off since it wasn't working.

One of the biggest challenges for any relationships is that it involves two people, each with an independent mind, spirit, hopes, dreams, aspirations. Fact is people area always changing, and if you're luck you change in a similar direction - also known as "growing together". Many also grow apart, thus they eventually separate. Yeah, it happens often at a young age when you meet as basically kids and grow into some form of adulthood.

But the 50%+ divorce rate shows us that "grown-ups" are by no means immune to this same phenomenon. It's just a fact of life when you have two (or more) people sharing a life together.

Again, congratulations to you and Becca. Wow, you've even passed the 7 years together mark - which has a lot more significance than many people give it credit for. More on that soon.

Have an awesome day!
Absolutely it can last! My wife, Becca, and I were highschool sweet hearts and married at age 20/19. I was a year ahead of Becca and when I started college I had a lot of similar feelings, Bryce is having now. I broke up with her during my freshman year. While enjoying my "freedom" checking out my new opportunities, I realized what I really loved about Becca. Fortunately for me, she forgave my mistake and took me back! Becca didn't fit many of the things I'd expected in my "dream girl", but love isn't always about those things. True love sees past missed expectations and imperfections. True love sees past the personal evolution, too. Becca and I are very much different people than when we were first married. We've both had to adjust a little to accomodate our differences, but we still love each other the same despite them. We're going on 10 years this June and I can say our relationship is as strong if not stronger than our first year.

Ultimately, I believe it comes down to the effort both people put into their relationship. Communicate, compromise, and love unconditionally. If either side doesn't put in that effort to succeed, a marriage will fail, regardless of the stage of life in which you were married.

[...] High School Sweethearts - Can It REALLY Last? (Video) – I find this topic interesting, because Christine and I have been together since we were 19. While we weren’t High School Sweethearts, most experts would say it shouldn’t have lasted because we were too young and we would grow apart. Instead we grew together, and I couldn’t imagine trying to build a life with someone I didn’t know until I was 30. I think getting together so young is one of the biggest strengths in our relationship. [...]
