Legalize Prostitution? SHOCKING Poll Results Are In!
Wow, what a ride…
Two weeks ago we took a poll to see exactly how our readers feel about Prostitution.
We asked: "Should We Legalize Prostitution Now?"
The conversation was heated and down right amazing. Readers left many hundreds of comments all over Netscape.com and on the posts themselves.
So just what were the results of this controversial prostitution poll?
More than 2800 of our readers spoke out and the answers will surprise you…
The response to this poll from Netscape.com was so strong that it literally crashed our servers after just a few hours - oops. We’ve since upgraded our servers to handle the additional traffic that a topic like this can generate. If you did not get to Take the Legalize Prostitution Poll before, do it now so that your voice can be heard! Thank you for your patience as we recovered from these growing pains.
Here’s the breakdown as of 5/15/2007
(We’ll update the results periodically as the numbers change.)
- 20% of our readers (591 votes) said that it’s a Puritanical law that belongs in the 1600’s - along with witch burnings.
- 53% of our readers (1525 votes) said that prostitution is here to stay. Let’s make it safer by regulating it, like we do other professions.
- 13% of our readers (382 votes) don’t like it personally, but said the government has no business in their sex life.
- 11% of our readers (328 votes) are against it for moral / religious reasons, stating it’ll be the end of moral values and decency.
- 2% of our readers (63 votes) are concerned it will hurt babies and little kittens everywhere.
What is truly fascinating is that 86% of the people polled supported legalizing prostitution, even though many of they may not personally care for it. Only 13% of our readers were truly against it, most of them citing their personal morality preferences as the reason.
Wow - don’t know about you, but we expected the numbers to be a little different ;-).
It’s not exactly a close call, more of a landslide really, but it looks like support to Legalize Prostitution is strong!
So this begs the question - how can something that is supported by such an overwhelming majority of our population be illegal? Is there such a strong religious bias and influence in government that the perceived morality of a few is the basis for the laws that govern us all?
This seems to indicate an obvious disconnect between lawmakers and the people they answer to - yes, they do work for us, not the other way around.

I could be wrong, but given the source of the people taking this pole, there just might be a bit of bias involved here. I don’t doubt that there is quite a bit of support for legalizing prostitution in Mainstream America, but my guess is that taking the results of the pole at face value would be quite a mistake.
The main ’source’ of the people taking this poll is Netscape.com.
nordsieck - it’s spelt “poll”, not “pole”. “pole” is what’s up your… never mind.
Of course there’s a margin for error, and of course this doesn’t represent all of USA. That’s how polls work. But they still give you a good idea of how people feel and should not be ignored.
This result shows exactly why there should be more referendums on such moral issues, prostitution, stem cell research, abortion etc. Governments usually loud mouth such issues when they want to cover the introduction of an unpopular tax bill.
Governments should confine themselves to the economic running of the country and leave morals and ethics to the people. Conduct referendums and ASK us what we want. Why are they so afraid of giving people the right to choose.
My personal opinion on prostitution is that it should be legalized and controlled. I don’t want to see huge billboards with ‘CUT PRICE SEX TODAY’ written for my kids to read; nor do I want to live next door or have prostitution near schools. put them in industrialized areas. But legalize it, get rid of those grotty pimps who exploit drugged addicts and let women conduct their own transactions. Ensure regular health checks and get the industry out where it can be monitored.
As a widow with four kids i know what it is to do it tough and tho thankfully I’ve never had to sleep with someone for money, i would NEVER NEVER condemn a woman who did.
referendums on federal law are currently not constitutional. if you would like them to be you shoudl push for an ammendment

its a good idea, direct access. democracy i believe its called.
Yeah…hmmm…so, if 86% of us want to raise the level of individual freedoms regarding sexual repression to that of the Europeans, Asians, Africans, Latinos, and Nevadans…why is there a “fight for morality” in so very many American communities to close strip clubs, adult video stores, “bath houses”, etc? Is it to quell the criminals that can feed from these enterprises? Are these enterprises fodder for local politicians who need easy targets to demonstrate their stalwart safeguarding of American Values? Or is hypocrisy the real core of those values?
Somehow I can’t believe the “Moral Majority” that catapulted the Neocons into office are represented in your poll.
And if you think the rest of you have it bad ’cause you can’t buy nookie…consider the poor jerks in military uniform. They cannot legally engage in ANY multi-person sex act unless they are married (and then, of course, only with their spouse). They cannot legally enjoy anal, oral, or homosexual sex with ANYONE including their spouse. These puritanical provisions of military law were reviewed, and reaffirmed, just a few years ago. If that’s not bad, enough just last year a directive came down specifically forbidding soldiers from enjoying prostitutes ANYWHERE, even where it IS legal.
Personally, I believe that the main reason so many men are driving around in gas-slurping, ozone-eating, battle-tank sized SUV’s and pickups is to compensate for a perceived lack of manhood from stemming from an unavailability of easy sex. And many of both sexes make up for feelings of inadequate sexual desirability with the cheap comfort of Big Macs and Ho-Ho’s.
So fellows save the planet, save your waistline, save your self-esteem, save your money: go to Prague and screw a hooker.
Of course, ladies, if you would just wear your panties a bit looser the bottom would fall out of the whole bottom-for-sale market and this wouldn’t even be an issue. So go ahead and have that second mojito. While you’re at it consider doing the patriotic thing and hug a soldier.
You know who doesn’t have extra time to spend taking polls on the web? Parents who are trying to raise the next generation. We don’t want our daughters to become prostitutes. We don’t want our sons to buy prostitutes. Prostitution is not a victimless crime. Prostitution hurts the prostitute and it hurts the family of the John even if the John is too much of a selfish ass to realize it. I have seen marriages torn apart by prostitution, not because it is illegal, but because it hurts a woman when her husband has sex with other women! There are good reasons that prostitution is illegal. Obviously you think you have tapped a deep vein of pro-prostitution sentiment, but you are just preaching to the converted here.
According to the national polls on www.prostitutionprocon.org the number in the U.S. is only around 20% support but then again most people don’t ask the question and it depends on the wording.
Hey Stephanie,
Just to clarify, this poll represents people all over the U.S. as well.
Regarding the polls you mention where there was a 20% approval rate, what was the sample size, what questions were asked, who did the polling, and how were the responders selected?
Thanks!
Dan & Jennifer
Once again, someone is trying to push their personal morals on everyone.
Candace, I believe the only time prostitution hurts the prostitute is when she’s being forced into it; this is why I believe it should be legalized and regulated and the pimps run out! If she thought it through and chose this profession for whatever intelligent reason and has a select clientele, there’s no reason she should become a victim; as long as they are both consenting adults, there is no victim. Once someone tries to take advantage of the other without their consent, THEN you have a victim. This happens now; it’s called date rape.
The issue of legalizing prostitution has no bearing on the example you used. If a husband isn’t happy at home with his wife for whatever reason and chooses to have an affair, of course his wife will be upset!! Will she be LESS upset if the affair is with his secretary as opposed to a prostitute (legal or illegal)? I doubt it; she’s going to be unhappy because he cheated on her, plain and simple. THAT I can understand; what I don’t understand is why you drag prostitution into the equation.
Having ANY sex laws on what two consenting adults do in a private bedroom is bad government. Adult Prostitution being illegal is one of them. This is one of many examples of the U.S. government acting like big brother and treating adults like children and the government being their mommy. Do you really want the government to be your mommy? I feel this is unconstitutional. Why do you think the USA has more people in jail then any other country? It’s because of laws like these. There are millions of laws: city, county, state, federal laws and no effort to get rid of any laws only efforts to add more so we can put more people in jail. Also, why do some strangers insist on telling people they donât know what to do. If you agree with me, go to www.lp.org and vote libertarian. And/Or write your congressman for your state.
Government has no place in the worldâs bedrooms.
No one has the right to tell a person, what they can, or can not do with their bodies.
Governmentâs making it illegal because of âimmoralityâ and âfamily valuesâ, are caving in to a demand from the various religious factions, and should pull their collective heads out of the dark ages.
The idea that ââif we make it illegalâ then we will protect the âstate of marriageâ and our familyâs and children, Is ludicrous, if a man or woman is going to âcheatâ on their spouse, it wonât matter whether a sex worker is illegal or not, it will happen.
I think legalizing prostitution will also lower the sexually oriented crime rate, where as, since it is available legally, the incidences of rape will lower drasticaly.
People will think twice before getting married just because their spouse is âHOTâ, and then getting divorced the week after, because they arenât so hot anymoreâŠ.
Marriage for Sex will be a thing of the past, and marriage for love, mutual respect, and the desire to actually be with their partner, will replace marrying a âlive in loverâ , and maybe people will start to look for an actual relationship instead of one perceived.
As well, I donât know about you, but I would rather offer my son or daughter the concept that sex is not a reason to get married, respect and love are.
And if my child needs to get sex off their minds in order to actually think with their heads instead of the southern regions⊠Then as long as they practice it smart and safely⊠why notâŠ
Legalizing prostitution would help for a number of reasons. It would create a new source of taxes, hopefully preventing increased taxes else where. It would be regulated, preventing the abuse of prostitutes and allow for regular STD testing.
Concerning the spouse being cheated on, if my husband decided to go to a prostitute or a mistress, I would not blame the prostitute or the mistress. I would blame my husband. He is an adult, if he chooses to harm me by cheating on me, spending our money on another woman, and so on, he should be to blame. He is the one breaking vows.
As for our children, whether we like it or not, at the age of 18, they are adults. All parents can really do is cross their fingers and hope their children make choices they approve of.
If you do not like the show, change the channel. If you do not like the book do not read it. If you do not approve of prostitution, do not go to one or work as one. It seems as if most people believe in freedom, as long as it abides by their rules.
Legalize Prostitution? Thats like putting up a stop sign everybody will run anyway, so the goverment can make you pay a fine for what everybody is doing now anyway. And start up fees and inspections and this and that, shit who do you think would pay for all that crap. HELLO! The customers. Not that I am one or anything.
