I'm a lawyer who firmly believes in legalizing prostitution. I have defended many clients who have been arrested for either soliciting or engaging in prostitution. More than half of all the cases I have defended have ended up in all the charges being dismissed by the DA. And even when these people are found guilty they do not serve a lot of time in jail and end up right back on the streets doing the same thing. The current prostitution laws ( at least here in CA ) only benefits us lawyers because we end up making a lot of money defending the girls and johns. In the real world prostitution is a never ending cat and mouse game. When the cats (cops) away...the mice (prostitues/johns) will play. It's like trying to eliminate speeders. It's never going to happen regardless of how many citations are issued. Personally I solicit prostitues on a regular basis myself and when and if I ever get caught I will continue to do the same thing.

Let's look over the hundreds of opinions pro and con, society recognizes each as legal and illegal determined by the laws of man. It didn't happen this way by accident nor did it take place over night. Who determined prostitution was not a legal act for a means for one to make aliving at. Who was it that determined prostitution is a profession. If one engages in the act to sell Pussy and likewise engages in the purchasing of Pussy, what constitutes either of these to be a legitimate profession. If either of them do it once or two times then both are Professionals. With so very little and limited experience one acquires the titleship to be a Professional.
No other similar profession readily comes to mind for me to wonder why we have objected to the first act of humanity to be a sin and society to deem an unlawful illegal act when there were no factories or stores or schools or hospitals or court rooms to practice another profession or ways of means to make an income to provide a family way of life. Time has proven that whether sex be a free act or by the discriminating tastes one has by his or her own choice to be willing to pay for the priviledge to sample Pussy of another age size shape color for an agreed value of worth. In fact does anyone know how or where you had to go to buy Pussy and what did you use for money, perhaps it was with a promise or committment to plant their garden or take the tools made from sticks and stones to hunt to harvest meat or to build their outhouse or fetch water and firewood. What made the act the first profession to be a sin and unlawful. How could it come to be that the act of greatest human pleasure, hands down the one thing man has proven to not be denyed of whether it be for free or by mutual agreed price that if it's for sale, we will buy it and if you would rather say it like this " If you are willing to pay a price for Pussy then I'm agreed to sell it" . Obviously woman has had just as much desire to receive the pleasures man has so willingly obliged. Does anyone disagree to this not to be the absolute truth? It is a waste of ones time to even make comparisons to other human desires society allows or doesn't allow. Simply put, neither man or woman desires anything life offers to be equal and will by whatever necessary way continue to exchange in this act and in no particular words does it even have to be said, you can't take Pussy off the market.
So as normal human responses it can be said that we can't live and survive without the human pleasures received from Pussy and we have the facts of life as proof. As a society we are the only ones that have the power and the say so to continue as it is or to change the acts and laws of man to change the current laws we made a mistake and it's time to forgive those who think they are doing the right thing in upholding the laws of the land and call for this change. In all places of life on this earth , man has made mistakes and has forgiven those over time and this is no different. We all recognize and can agree this has always been the way and its time again to set things right without guilt and without sin. It isn't necessary to tax Pussy, we don't tax air and water. That's all I got to say about Professional Pussy buyers and sellars.

Wow, again you state how you just dont care about the safety of hookers. That's such an amazing statement to make (twice). That again is a big problem with it being illegal, people (like yourself) consider them second class citizens. Would you make the same comment about porn movie actors? Would you say that you don't care about their safety? How far do you take that statement, would you say you don't care about the safety of anyone who does something you don't like or maybe think is tacky or disgusting? Why are prostitutes a class of citizen that you just don't care about? Again, you're making my point for me. This profession being illegal makes a certain type of individual in our society disregard them as being human. These women are people just the same as you and me, and yet, somehow you dismiss them as less.

Your comment about the prices going down is nothing but personally speculation without anything to back it up. All we have is the evidence of Nevada and what has happened there to go on. It's something that is personal in nature and I don't care how many people / brothels are out there doing it, there aren't going to be a lot of girls wanting to give "that" away for $20. The reason you hear of that now, is because of the "crack-whore" syndrome. Because many of the women on the street are on drugs, their desire to get high will outweigh their previous prices.

Regarding making teen drinking legal because it will make them safer just makes no sense. How would allowing teens to become chemically dependent add to their safety. If you're going to make a comparison argument, please use an example that can be defended as making society safer.

Look I'll do you guys a favor. I won't post here anymore. It's clear to me and others that the two of you have extreme liberal views. Look at your posts. You pick a topic and give your side. The people who back your position up, you actually take the time to post again and praise them. You wan't others to understand your viewpoint without taking the time to understand theirs. If someone mentions religion as a reason to oppose something you get whipped into a frenzy. Usually acting like you have a problem with religion. If one cites religion as a reason for opposition, you act like you can't understand why anyone would rely on it. You don't take into consideration that many morally oppose things without relying on the bible to make that decision for them. Like religion is wrong. Your way of thinking seems to be anything goes, and everything is ok and no ones business. You think prostitution should be legal, group sex is ok, and it's not your partners business if you did everyone in town before you met them. No I'm not a conservative. But you guys just added another "L" in liberal.

"all laws are an enforcement of one person or groups values on everyone else. So I guess we should just eradicate all law."

How about we reduce the number of laws to only those laws that prevent actual harm to others? That should get rid of about 97% of them...

Sorry to take up more space. But I did forget to answer a question I was asked. How do I know the overwhelming majority of people are against prostitution? Not just a slight majority. Easy. Most people don't care what happens to prostitutes. If their was even a close percentage in support of it their would be a serious debate to legalize it. Then you have to consider the disdain that most people hold for them. When this issue has come up around me, I have never had a single person tell me in my life it should be legalized.

First off I am not an overly religious person. Second prostitution was not accepted in the biblical times. You can have the legal system take prostitutes more seriously by legalizing it. But you can't make the people who sit on the juries. I think my dig on the prices going down is true. It may be legal in Nevada, but not everywhere in the state. So the few places it is legal they can charge jacked up rates. Trust me if it was legal everywhere they couldn't charge what they do and compete. Most never would go to a prostitute. But just the same the small percentage that would, would make up a large number of men. I can't see why to "make them safer", it should be legal. Do we apply that logic for everything. I think that teens would drink should be safer to. So can I get by with throwing teen keggers in my basement? I don't wish ill will on anyone. But I really don't care to much for the safety of hookers. Just so you know, all laws are an enforcement of one person or groups values on everyone else. So I guess we should just eradicate all law.

Mike, first of all, where are you finding these statistics that the overwhelming number of people oppose prostitution? The poll here, which I agree will lean to more accepting views, shows just the opposite that the overwhelming number of people think it should be legal.

Making it legal will force the legal commuity to give credibility to any claims of assult or abuse. It also will take the girls out of the "shadows" so they won't be afraid to report crimes of abuse. So, yes it being legal would mean that assult rates would drop dramatically.

My point about a non religious reason to oppose it is simple. Not everyone is religious, and not everyone wants to live by your biblical rules for society. Therefore, you'll need to find reasons that aren't based on the bible to justify your position. However, if you really want to dig into the bible, prostitution was widely accepted in biblical times. The temple prostitute was a very respected position. She was called the "K'desha".

It's funny how you make my points for me. You said - "Why would someone be so concerned over the safety of hookers?"
That comment alone is the reason prostitution should be legal. Guess what? That hooker is someones daughter, sister, mother etc. She's a person trying to make a living the best way she can. Make whatever argument you'd like about other careers available, but where there is a need, someone will fill it.
But I find your comment amazing. Are you baically saying that you don't care about the safety of prostitutes? They're free game to beat, rape, abuse and kill? I thought you were a religious person. Doesn't that clearly state to love everyone?

"Tacky and disgusting"? So, what you find tacky or disgusting should be illegal? What about the porn industry, should that be illegal as well? People find it tacky. People find used car dealers and lawyers tacky, should that be illegal?

Drugs would be all but non-existent. Remember, the girls get tested regularly. Any drug use would show and she wouldn't get her lisence renewed.

You are right, there can be instances of STD's inbetween tests. That's a risk. However, rather than that girl spreading that disease for years, it might happen for a week or two. Secondly, it takes STD's a time before they become transmitable. STD's also exist in the bar scene, the dating scene or even in married couples, so there is no perfect way to avoid STD's other than abstinence. And since you made a comment on the other thread saying "Stop giving it up often and I'm gone", I'm guessing that abstinence isn't an option.

Now, on August 7th, you said - "You have to be a loser to pay someone to have sex with you." Today you said - "Face it most of the guys who go those places have one thing most don’t. Really good paying jobs." Are they losers with really good paying jobs? Just wondering. Now, that statement is also completely untrue. Many guys with reglular jobs just choose to save up a couple hundred dollars to treat themselves to some fun with a prostitute.

Your argument about prostitution being everywhere and the prices would be driven down so everyone would go has two problems. One, we already have it legal in Nevada, and that hasn't happened. We have a perfect way to check and determine how it would work. We don't have to speculate on what might happen. Secondly, if it's so tacky and disgusting and there is an overwhelming distain for it, why would everyone "with a dollar" go?

Create whatever argument you want justifying your claim, but there is really only one. It's based soley on religious views. The women's safety is at risk, and the "religious" folks out there try to stand on morals while these girls are dying for no reason. Legalizing it provides safety and regulation for the industry.

Again Mike, I'm going to ask again since I can't seem to get an answer. WHY IS IT THAT SEX IS THE ONLY THING THAT'S LEGAL TO DO, BUT NOT SELL? If your argument is strong, you should have no problem with an answer to this question.

It also will take the girls out of the “shadows” so they won’t be afraid to report crimes of abuse. So, yes it being legal would mean that assult rates would drop dramatically.

My point about a non religious reason to oppose it is simple. Not everyone is religious, and not everyone wants to live by your biblical rules for society. Therefore, you’ll need to find reasons that aren’t based on the bible to justify your position. However, if you really want to dig into the bible, prostitution was widely accepted in biblical times. The temple prostitute was a very respected position. She was called the “K’desha”.

It’s funny how you make my points for me. You said – “Why would someone be so concerned over the safety of hookers?”
That comment alone is the reason prostitution should be legal. Guess what? That hooker is someones daughter, sister, mother etc. She’s a person trying to make a living the best way she can. Make whatever argument you’d like about other careers available, but where there is a need, someone will fill it.
But I find your comment amazing. Are you baically saying that you don’t care about the safety of prostitutes? They’re free game to beat, rape, abuse and kill? I thought you were a religious person. Doesn’t that clearly state to love everyone?

“Tacky and disgusting”? So, what you find tacky or disgusting should be illegal? What about the porn industry, should that be illegal as well? People find it tacky. People find used car dealers and lawyers tacky, should that be illegal?

Drugs would be all but non-existent. Remember, the girls get tested regularly. Any drug use would show and she wouldn’t get her lisence renewed.

You are right, there can be instances of STD’s inbetween tests. That’s a risk. However, rather than that girl spreading that disease for years, it might happen for a week or two. Secondly, it takes STD’s a time before they become transmitable. STD’s also exist in the bar scene, the dating scene or even in married couples, so there is no perfect way to avoid STD’s other than abstinence. And since you made a comment on the other thread saying “Stop giving it up often and I’m gone”, I’m guessing that abstinence isn’t an option.

Now, on August 7th, you said – “You have to be a loser to pay someone to have sex with you.” Today you said – “Face it most of the guys who go those places have one thing most don’t. Really good paying jobs.” Are they losers with really good paying jobs? Just wondering. Now, that statement is also completely untrue. Many guys with reglular jobs just choose to save up a couple hundred dollars to treat themselves to some fun with a prostitute.

Your argument about prostitution being everywhere and the prices would be driven down so everyone would go has two problems. One, we already have it legal in Nevada, and that hasn’t happened. We have a perfect way to check and determine how it would work. We don’t have to speculate on what might happen. Secondly, if it’s so tacky and disgusting and there is an overwhelming distain for it, why would everyone “with a dollar” go?

Create whatever argument you want justifying your claim, but there is really only one. It’s based soley on religious views. The women’s safety is at risk, and the “religious” folks out there try to stand on morals while these girls are dying for no reason. Legalizing it provides safety and regulation for the industry.

Again Mike, I’m going to ask again since I can’t seem to get an answer. WHY IS IT THAT SEX IS THE ONLY THING THAT’S LEGAL TO DO, BUT NOT SELL? If your argument is strong, you should have no problem with an answer to this question.

I don't make the rules. You cannot change the minds of the overwhelming majority of people who oppose prostitution. Making it legal won't make them take prostitutes any more serious when assaulted. It's wrong but true. If you believe one word of the bible then you shouldn't need one non-religious reason to oppose it. There are many things that the bible didn't say were wrong, but we have laws against. If it included everything, it would be so long no one would have ever completed it. Why would someone be so concerned over the safety of hookers? If they weren't doing it then they wouldn't have to fear for their safety. How about society deems it wrong because it's tacky and disgusting. Also drugs follow prostitution hand in hand. Legalizing would not make it as safe as some believe. I'm sure the incidence of STD's at the "classy" places is lower than with street walkers. Two reasons why. The "classy" places test all the time, and most people can't afford to go there. Testing frequently helps, but it is misleading. A test can come up negative, then the person can contract it in between tests. Just ask the porn industry about that. If it would become legalized it would be everywhere. Then the expensive places would have to charge lower rates. Then every guy with a dollar would be at the former "classy" places. Keeping away joe average is one way they have kept the STD rate so low. Face it most of the guys who go those places have one thing most don't. Really good paying jobs. Which translates into not as likely to have had a risky lifestyle. If one is so concerned with the safety of these women then do one thing. Keep it illegal. Assault at a young age is far more common amongst women involved in the porn industry, then it is for jill average. I suspect the same for women who are prostitutes. So prostitution isn't fun and victimless.

Mike, I agree the "anything goes and it's all free" mindset / experiment of the 60's was a failure, and yes, 40 years later, there are still consequences to that attitude. However, prostitution is thousands of years old, probably as old as man. Secondly, prostitution is not a lifestlye of the 60's. Prostitution is about sex for money, the 60's was about free love.

I don't think that people are arguing that it should be legal because people will do it anyway. The base arguement is that there are no "non-religious" reasons it should be illegal.

You say that they have to be caught in the act to be prosecuted. I don't know if that is true or not, but I can promise you that thousands of prostitutes across this country don't trust that they can go to the police and report an assult and not be charged with prostitution. As a result, thousands of assults go unreported. Even murderers that target prostitutes aren't given the publicity that's given to others. They're a forgotten class of women in our society. Keeping prostitution promotes violence against them.

There will always be women who choose to work the streets, but it would be easier to enforce if there were legal alternatives for these women. They would be protected in a brothel situation where their safety is paramount.

You also say that the stigma would remain even if it were legal, admitting that juries already "look down" on them because of their line of work. I don't think that a woman who'd been beaten is any less of a victim because she's a hooker than a woman who has a different profession.

And Mike or anyone for that matter, please answer this question.

WHY IS SEX THE ONLY THING THAT'S LEGAL TO DO, BUT NOT LEGAL TO SELL?

I'm going to keep asking that question until someone can attempt an answer. Thanks..

The point that I tried to make earlier was simple. Look at our society up until the 60's. Some of the ills that we have in our society today would have happened, regardless of how wild the 60's were. But up until that point things were pretty tame. Then this whole mindset of anything goes invaded the culture. It seemed like a good idea then. Today were still cleaning up the mess. Legalizing prostitution because people will do it anyway doesn't make sense. You could apply that logic to any topic. You could argue we should have government funded crackhouses to keep it off the street. Making it legal wouldn't protect them either. Their would still be plenty of women doing it on the street. Prostitutes have to be caught in the act. If they are assaulted they can go to the police and prosecute. Legalizing it wouldn't make one take an assault claim any more serious. I don't think to a jury in an assault case it would matter if prostitution is legal or not. The stigma would still remain.

Hey Melizien,

Just a few points to consider... Remember, we're talking about government legislating one man's morality to be the law of the land - a very dangerous proposition.

The argument that prostitution should be illegal because it will deter your grown (read: adult age) children from doing it is rooted in wanting control what they do. This is artificially raising the age of maturity in some cases and saying "yeah, you're an adult, but not really that much of an adult that you can do what you want with your own body, even if you don't hurt anyone - because I don't like it".

I can understand the natural urge of a parent to control their child, even after they reach the age of maturity, but our children will live their own lives and make their own choices. All we can ask is that we've raised them in such a way that they will make the best choices for 'them' - not necessarily for 'us'.

In the same vein, you could argue that too much candy should be made illegal, so that you can tell your children "now kids, too much candy is not only bad, but it's illegal".

Consider the chilling reality we have today. Every single woman (or man - but let's not go there today) is someone's daughter, mother, sister. Because someone pushed their "moral" or religious beliefs into law, suddenly these women have been made an underclass with no rights. If you are victimized or assaulted, you can fight back, go to court, call the Police. These women can never report an attack, rape, abuse, nothing. And THAT should be a crime.

While as parents we may not want to face the reality that our children will make their own decisions, it's not realistic to ask for laws to be passed for everything we deem immoral or unhealthy for our child.

Once we accept that these (adult) women will make their own choices, let's make it possible for them to defend themselves.

Again, the major point of decriminalizing prostitution is to get rid of most problems attributed to it today. The crime and violence in the prostitution world today is CAUSED by the very people who outlawed it. They're responsible for every single act of violence that young woman can't report to the police for fear of being jailed.

Enforce government controls and regulation on this industry, and our children will be safer and will have a way to defend themselves without fear of legal action being taken against them.

Having said all that, it would not be my choice that my daughter choose prostitution as a way to make her living... But if she did, I would want her to be safer that the girls are today.

Prostitution should not be legalized. I dont personally have a problem with it. However if you legalize anything like this it will become a major immoral situation. I dont want my daughter to approach me or say to men in years to come "shcool and work is too hard! I think I will just become a prostitute instead." As a mom I would say "no its not something that you want to do sweety! It hurts you in the long run." But she yells "I can make ALOT of money!" and then she says "I'm eighteen, I can do whatever I want! Besides its LEGAL so what is the problem? YOu can't stop me."

What kind of message are we giving to our young women? THat sex and money is okay and working hard to achieve something is not that important? If it is legalized you can expect many women to prostitute on the weekends as a part time job. THe money is rediculously easy to make. So this fact would tempt more women to do it alone. These are your daughters that you have to think about. Do you want your daughter to think of becoming a prostitute?

Mike, well that generalized statement without any reasoning behind it is a symptom of how our society has lost all critical thinking skills and just repeats what others have told them. If you have an actual comment to make based on any fact, perceived facts or even thoughts, please feel free to include yourself in the debate. However your most recent comment is of no help to anyone.

Francis, first of all, treating people like they exist soley for sexual satisfaction has been going on for generations. What do you think a one night stand is? How about actors in adult films? Loveless marriages? Many swinging encounters? All of these situations are soley for sex. Why do you seperate prostitution from the rest of these acts?
The other odd part of your statement is you say:
"So do we make our laws for the hundreds of thousands of women who are victims or for the 10 sexually obsessed women with blogs who want the right to sell their body (but demand that society protect them at the same time)?"

Don't you realize that the reason prostitutes are victims and are abused is because they're not protected or regulated. If they had the protection of a legal brothel, govt mandated testing and simply the idea that they're not in the shadows anymore and can report crimes against them, there would be many many fewer victims.

Why won't anyone answer the question why sex is the only thing that's legal to do, but not purchase? Please give me a valid answer to this one.

Also, as stated before, if you had a daughter and for whatever reason she chose prostitution, would you rather her be on the streets of Chicago, or in a legal brother in Nevada? And before you start saying your daughter would never do that, remember that every prostitute is someones daughter.
These women aren't society's outcasts. Some are professional employed women that choose to make some extra money. I know one woman who's a nurse M-F and a call girl on the weekend. I know her from her nurse position, and she felt comfortable enought to tell me what her side job was.
What you need to realize is you promote violence against women by opposing the protection that's given by making it legal.

You can't deny a job because it's not something they enjoy. Do you think people enjoy being garbage men? Do you think it might have something to do with the money? How about people that clean up after crime scenes? Do they like to clean up blood, vomit etc, or do you think they do it for the money? Should that be illegal because it's driven by money? I could give you a hundred jobs that people do soley for the money and feel degraded by their jobs. That's not a reason to make a job against the law.

It is not ok to treat other human beings like objects that exist solely for your sexual satisfaction. Very very FEW people CHOOSE prostitution. With rare exceptions, it is something that desperate women do. So do we make our laws for the hundreds of thousands of women who are victims or for the 10 sexually obsessed women with blogs who want the right to sell their body (but demand that society protect them at the same time)?

Prostitution is harmful to the prostitute. You can try to convince yourself that she really likes it or it's better than working at KMart or whatever ridiculous justification you come up with. But it is psychologically (and physically) damaging to real women.

Prostitutes are people. Real human beings. They do not enjoy giving 4 or 5 guys a blow job every day. If you think they do enjoy it, you are kidding yourself. They do it for the money.

Once you convince me that they have other options for the money, AND they have a path out of prostitution, then you MIGHT convince me that it is a CHOICE. Until then, you are just an apologist for the serious and horrific abuse of women in the name of free love and being "sex positive" -- and that is NOT ok.

I don't think my comment was out of line or ignorant. Anyone can find someone to have sex with. They don't have to be in a relationship or act in a deceptive manner towards another person either. There are plenty of people do not wan't to be in a relationship, but are looking for sexual companionship. The girls you referred to have problems. They did not have to have sex with those men. You are not obligated to have sex with someone because they spent money on you. It shows the morals they have. They should have seen what the man's intentions were. If he was actually interested or just wanted sex. If they didn't wan't to but knew he expected it in return for money spent, they should have told him how they felt up front. If my wife did have an affair I'd rather have it be one with one guy and not a prostitute. At least I'd know that one guy hasn't slept with hundreds of women. Besides that there's a better chance she'd slip up with joe average. That way there's a real good chance I find out and show her the door quickly. Most people who use the services of prostitutes are not businessmen. They are joe averages who just wan't to have easy accessible sex with women who are not their wives.
